Oct. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Baquer Nazami, the 85-year-old Iranian-American who was held in Iran since 2016 when he went to free his son, Siamak Nazami, has been released, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Saturday.
“The Secretary-General is grateful that, following his appeals to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, our former colleague Baquer Namazi has been allowed to leave Iran to receive medical treatment abroad,” the UN statement said.
Nazami, a former Unicef official, was released in 2020 from serving the ten-year prison sentence imposed on him and his son in October 2016 for alleged espionage; however, they did not allow her to leave the country to treat his medical problems.
In addition, Guterres has celebrated the announcement that his son has also been released and has stated that he will continue to interact with the authorities on a variety of issues, such as the “regional situation, sustainable development and the promotion and protection of Human Rights.”

The US State Department has celebrated that Iran has authorized Nazami to receive medical treatment abroad and that his son has a “humanitarian license” to accompany him.
The United States has shown its gratitude to Guterres and to countries such as Switzerland, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and the United Kingdom “for their tireless work to help the Nazimis.”
“Our efforts are far from over. We remain committed and determined to secure the freedom of all Americans wrongfully detained in Iran and elsewhere. They must be reunited with their loved ones as soon as possible,” said Department spokesman Ned Price. in a statement released this Saturday.
