Iran became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Tuesday during the summit held throughout the day by the leaders of the group, chaired this year by India and which also includes Russia and China.
The Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, has stressed that the measure “reinforces the security” of Tehran and has expressed that the accession represents an opportunity for “sustainable economic development” of the country, according to information from the Mehr news agency.
The Iranian Parliament approved in November 2022 a bill on membership of the body, founded in 2001 and which includes the world’s largest oil-producing nations.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, had previously shown his “joy” at the decision and ventured that the summit would also serve for Belarus to sign a memorandum that allows the process for its full accession to the SCO to be launched in the future.
For his part, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has shown interest in also joining the organization after attending as a guest at a summit in which member countries praised Turkey’s “mediating” role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
