Iran has filed a complaint this Wednesday against Canada in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for violating its sovereign immunity after Ottawa classified Tehran in 2012 as a “State sponsor of terrorism”.
“Canada has adopted and implemented a series of legislative, executive and judicial measures against Iran and its property (since 2012) in breach of its international obligations,” reads the text, which asks the court to determine whether Ottawa has violated its immunity as sovereign state.
The complaint dates back to September 2012, when the Canadian government described Iran as a “State sponsor of terrorism.” A little later, he suspended his diplomatic ties with Tehran and branded the Persian country as “the greatest threat to global security.”
In this way, Canada closed its Embassy in Iran and urged all Iranian diplomats to leave the country. At the time, Ottawa cited increased Iranian military assistance to Syria, the Islamic republic’s refusal to comply with UN resolutions on its nuclear program, and its constant threats against Israel as reasons for the decision.
Since then, relations between the two nations have been very damaged, to which are added the constant packages of sanctions against senior officials of the Revolutionary Guard and the Iranian security forces for their alleged responsibility in the violation of Human Rights in Iran. .
Currently, Canada does not include the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on its list of terrorist organizations, although the Quds Force, its armed wing, is on it. Tehran, however, is within the Immigration and Refugee Protection Law (IRPA) to prevent its members from entering the country.
