Iran criticizes the decision of the European Parliament to declare the Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group

Jan. 19 () –

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian has criticized the European Parliament’s designation of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group, calling the decision “inappropriate and wrong.”

This has been made known during a telephone conversation to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, in which he has conveyed his rejection of the resolution as “interventionist and unconventional”, as reported by IRNA.

“Unfortunately, today we witnessed the issuance of an emotional, sharp and unprofessional draft resolution by the European Parliament, which is in conflict with political rationality and civility,” Amirabdolahian was reported as saying during his conversation with Borrell.

The head of Iranian Diplomacy has maintained that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is “an official and sovereign institution” that plays “an important and vital role in providing national security” of Iran and the region.

For this reason, he has affirmed that the action of the European Parliament to accuse the Revolutionary Guard of Iran of terrorism is “a kind of shot at the foot of Europe itself”.

In this sense, Amirabdolahian has called on the European Parliament to reflect on the negative consequences of “this emotional behavior in Europe”, urging it to focus “on the path of diplomacy, constructive interaction and rationality”.

For his part, Borrell, according to the aforementioned media, has agreed that emotions and concerns prevail in the draft of the European Parliament.

Thus, he recalled that the European Parliament is “a completely independent institution” and that this resolution lacks executive capacity and only reflects the concerns of Europe.

All in all, Borrell has expressed his satisfaction with the diplomacy that is being carried out around the nuclear agreement, assuring that he will continue his efforts to reach an agreement.

“I am happy to hear the news of cooperation between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran and the optimism in this direction,” said the High Representative.
