Iran calls reports of attempted assassination of former Canadian minister "ridiculous"

MADRID 19 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canadian authorities have claimed to have dismantled an assassination attempt against former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler that was allegedly plotted by Iranian agents, although the Government of Iran has immediately disassociated itself from the accusations, which it has called “ridiculous.”

Sources cited by the newspaper ‘The Globe and Mail’ have indicated that Cotler was informed in October of the dismantling of the plan, after which he himself has revealed that the authorities notified him of the fact and has confirmed that he has been under police protection for a year. his criticism of Tehran.

The former minister and former parliamentarian, a lawyer by profession, has stated in statements to Radio Canada that the security deployment around him is constant and involves armed protection and the presence of an armored vehicle around his movements.

Subsequently, the general directorate for America of the Iranian Foreign Ministry has stated that these accusations “are in line with the campaign to promote false information about Iran” and has stressed that it is “false” and “unfounded” information from “a country which has become a refuge for escaped terrorists”.

In this sense, he has emphasized that “these unfounded accusations against Iran cannot divert public attention from the Zionist genocide against the oppressed Palestinian people and the complicity of Canada, one of the main supporters of the occupying regime,” according to a statement published by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
