Tehran says it is “not a mere coincidence” that the rebel and jihadist offensive was launched after the ceasefire in Lebanon
Dec. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Iran has assured this Monday that it will maintain the deployment of “military advisors” in Syria despite the offensive launched last week by rebel and jihadist groups in the province of Aleppo, after the death of a senior official of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. present in the area in support of the Syrian authorities.
“We have been present in that country for many years, when the Syrian people faced the threat of terrorism and at the invitation of the Syrian Government,” said the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, who stressed that this presence ” is not something new” and that “will continue in the future, according to the wish of the Syrian Government.”
Baqaei, who has not commented on whether Tehran will increase the presence of its forces in Syria in the face of the offensive in the north of the country, has reiterated that “insecurity in Syria is not limited to Syria” and has added that Turkey “is concerned about the course of events.”
“The events in Syria are complex and can be analyzed from various angles,” he argued, while noting that Israel “benefits” from the insecurity in the neighboring country. In this sense, he pointed out that the offensive was launched “immediately after” the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon.
Thus, he has questioned whether this fact “was a mere coincidence” and has once again criticized the “occupation” of parts of the country by the United States and the “coordination” between Washington and the groups involved in the offensive, according to what he has said. picked up by the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
The offensive by rebels and jihadists, led by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), has caused a withdrawal of government forces in several parts of Aleppo, which has led Damascus to respond with bombings together with Russia. Syria claimed this Monday to have “eliminated” “more than 400 terrorists” during the last day.
Moscow is one of the Syrian president’s main international supporters and its military intervention in 2015 allowed government forces to repel rebel advances and stabilize the fronts. In this sense, the Kremlin reiterated this Monday its support for Syrian President Bashar al Assad.
