Iran appoints a new ambassador to the UAE after eight years of vacancy

5 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of Iran has appointed Reza Ameri as the new Iranian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after eight years of vacancy and in the midst of a rapprochement process following the signing in March of an agreement between Tehran and Riyadh to restore their diplomatic relations.

According to information collected by the Iranian news agency Mehr, Ameri, who is now director general of the office for Iranians abroad within the Foreign Ministry, will soon travel to Abu Dhabi to take office.

The UAE sent its ambassador to Iran back in September 2022, more than six years after cutting ties with Tehran following Saudi Arabia’s decision to cut ties with the Iranian government in January 2016 following an assault on its Embassy in Tehran during a protest over the execution of a prominent Saudi Shiite cleric.

The agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume their diplomatic relations has been applauded by the countries of the region and has opened the possibility of a reduction in the disputes between the two countries in the Middle East, including the conflict in Yemen. In addition, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Naser Kanani, indicated on Tuesday that it also opened the door to an improvement in relations with the Gulf countries, including Bahrain, with which Tehran has a tense relationship.
