The Iranian Police have announced a campaign to prosecute the irregular use or lack of use of the hijab or Islamic veil starting this Saturday.
The Light project aims to “address social anomalies in the field of hijab,” explained the Greater Tehran Police, according to the Tasnim news agency.
“People who have not heeded previous warnings from the police will be specially warned in the city starting today and legal action will be taken against them,” the agency warned.
The Iranian authorities have recalled that “observing the hijab is the law and disobeying the law is a crime.” “Anyone who does not comply with the law has committed a crime. Not wearing the hijab is tantamount to violating the law, and the police will deal with violators in accordance with the law. Of course, I hope that we will not see any violation of the law,” he said. indicated a police officer.
The death of the Kurdish-Iranian Masha Amini after being attacked in police custody after her arrest for not wearing the hijab sparked a wave of protests led by women in autumn 2022. Since then, what is known as the Moral Police has been less strict with the regulations, partly due to resistance from part of the population.
Until now, surveillance with security cameras had been increased with fines for women who were recorded driving without a veil. Online crimes are also pursued, such as photographs of uncovered women published on sites such as Instagram.
The Police announcement could be an intermediate step before the entry into force of the new law on clothing that imposes draconian punishments being studied by the Council of Guardians of the Revolution, once approved by Parliament.
