Inter-communal violence this week in the Indian state of Manipur has left at least 54 dead

At least 54 people have died during clashes this week between communities in the Indian state of Manipur, the most violent in the recent history of the place, as confirmed by medical sources in their latest balance this Saturday.

Violence erupted on Wednesday during a march called by the All Manipur Tribal Students Union (ATSUM) in support of the native Naga and Kuki communities after authorities launched a move to grant tribal status to the metei community, majority in the indian stadium.

Of the 54 dead, 16 bodies already rest in the Churachandpur district hospital morgue, while another 15 were at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East district. The Lamphel Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in the Imphal West district has confirmed another 23 deaths, according to balances collected by the Indian network NDTV.

For the moment, and according to the same media outlet, the situation is now relatively calm in the Imphal valley, the epicenter of the clashes. The security presence, which has been reinforced with more Army troops and police officers, is still active on the roads in the area.
