Intel On Demand will allow us to improve Intel Sapphire Rapids processors after the fact

Intel today showcased new fourth-generation Xeon Scalable processors with Sapphire Rapids architecture, but as part of them, a new feature called Intel On Demand also arrives -which comes with some controversy behind it for what it represents-where buyers of these processors are offered the possibility of buying the processor in its base version and making various “extras” available to them.

This is what had previously been called SDSi, or Software Defined Silicon, and there are several modes of operation. On the one hand, the processor can be purchased with the licenses we deem necessary, so that when the time comes for the integration of the new servers, everything works as it should.

Besides, we can acquire the licenses a posteriori, something that will be divided into the payment of the full price of the license to have it permanently, but you can also have metered use licenses that will allow us to activate and deactivate characteristics of the processor according to the need that they make us, and we will be charged for its consumption.

The first providers of Intel On Demand will be H3C, Inspur, Lenovo, Supermicro and Variscalebut it is expected that this list will expand as this practice becomes more common, something that may eventually reach ordinary users, as was already the case in 2010 with the Intel Pentium G6951.
