Intel launches Lunar Lake processors for laptops, promising energy efficiency, performance and AI power

Intel has taken advantage of the fact that this week is the IFA 2024 in Berlin to launch the next generation of Intel Core Ultra processors, codenamed Lunar Lake. We are talking about the Intel Core Ultra 200V series, chips for laptops that not only compete with AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 (Strix Point), but also have to face Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite. For now, Intel claims that it matches or surpasses them in almost every aspect. The first laptops with Lunar Lake will arrive on September 24.

Battery life plays a central role in laptops and Intel needed to improve in this area with the arrival of Ryzen AI 300 and Snapdragon X Elite, so it has set to work. The company claims that the Core Ultra 200V series has the “most efficient x86 processor in history.” The figures offered by Intel itself claim that the Core Ultra 9 288 model (top of the range) reaches 14 hours of autonomy in UL Procyon Office, a benchmark which uses Microsoft Office apps, while the AMD HX 370 reaches 10.1 hours and the Qualcomm X1E-78-100 settles for 9.5 hours.

The practical example has been set by the manufacturers. The Dell XPS 13 laptop with Lunar Lake offers 26 hours of battery life. streaming Netflix at 1080p, compared to 18 hours for the previous model with the same components (except for the processor). We are talking about an improvement of 44%.

Intel also boasts about the integrated GPU in the Core Ultra 200V. According to the company, the Core Ultra 9 288V easily outperforms the Qualcomm X1E-84-100, which it averages 68% more frames per second when playing a variety of titles at 1080p, while the gap with the AMD HX 370 is shorter and it settles for a 16% improvement. All this without XeSS scaling. If it is activated, the company claims that even with ray tracing it would be possible to play Cyberpunk 2077 at 45 FPS (with an unspecified resolution). As with autonomy, one thing is the manufacturer’s tests and another is reality.

When it comes to laptops, we can’t miss the new star element: the NPU, a type of processor specific to artificial intelligence workloads that until now was rare to see. In this sense, Intel says that the Core Ultra 200V are prepared to make use of the Copilot AI features thanks to the fact that all models add up to between 40 and 48 TOPS (trillion operations per second). The minimum that a laptop must reach to receive the Microsoft Copilot+ PC seal is 40 TOPS, so the test has been passed. The Copilot AI functions will arrive on laptops with Lunar Lake processors in November.

The Core Ultra 200V series consists of nine models, all with four Lion Cove P cores and four Skymont E cores. The differences are marked by the clock speeds of each model, which range from 4.5 GHz to 5.1 GHz, as well as the amount of supported memory (16 GB or 32 GB LPDDR5X-8533) and an 8 MB or 12 MB L3 cache. The base TDP ranges from 8 W to 17 W, while the Core Ultra 9 288V tops out at 30 W. All chips have support for Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4, and Bluetooth 5.4.

Intel’s next step will be to launch the Core Ultra 200 series of desktop processors known as Arrow Lake. Rumors have been circulating about an October launch, but the company has yet to comment.
