The “Core i” family of Intel processors debuted in 2008. Since then we have lived with the already popular Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9, which only with that name already allowed us to give a first great reference of power and benefits that we could expect from these chips. The firm has now announced that this way of naming its processors is coming to an end.
Goodbye to the “i” of “Core i”. The next processors in this segment that Intel launches will stop using that “i” before the number, so that the current Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7 will become Core 3, Core 5 or Core 7. No more “generations”. It was also common for processors to indicate in their name the generation to which they belonged. Thus, we had, for example, the 12th generation Intel Core i5-12700. This information disappears in future models, although the generation data will be available in the processor number. In that example, the “12” of “12700” reveals just that, and removes that redundancy to simplify the model name.
He will debut with the Meteor Lake. The new way of naming these CPUs will debut with future Meteor Lake family processors. These chips will be rumored to be more than 20% faster than their predecessors, and this will be helped by the introduction of the new ‘Intel 4’ EUV photolithographic node. The first Meteor Lake chips are expected to arrive before the end of the year.
The Intel Core Ultra arrive. There is one more important novelty: the arrival of a new subfamily of premium processors that will have the last name “Ultra”. Intel does not make it too clear what advantages these chips will have, but there is an even more curious fact: that denomination will debut in the second half of 2023, something that contrasts with what will happen with the “non-Ultra”, which will begin to use that renaming with the Meteor Lake family.
