Indonesian security forces arrested the country’s Communications Minister Johnny Plate on Wednesday, accused of being involved in a bribery scheme and causing damage to the State.
The Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that Plate has been arrested as a “budget administrator” and given his status as a minister. “He violated Indonesia’s law on corruption, which provides for life imprisonment as the maximum punishment,” a spokesman for the entity said.
Thus, he specified that his actions would have caused serious damage to the State, valued at about 500 million dollars (about 461 million euros), according to information from the Antara news agency.
The country’s authorities have stressed that the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office are not related to “any political reason” and have asserted that the president, Joko Widodo, “will not be able to intervene if a senior government official violates the law.”
