Indonesia has marked a significant milestone in its international journey by formally joining the group BRICSa coalition of emerging economies that includes powers such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This bloc is known for its focus on providing a counterweight to Western influences in the global arena.
On Monday, Brazil, which currently holds the group’s rotating presidency, announced Indonesia’s addition as a full member. Indonesia’s reaction was immediate: on Tuesday, the country officially expressed its welcome to this decision, celebrating it as a strategic opportunity to expand collaboration and cooperation with other developing nations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta issued a statement emphasizing that its accession to the BRICS represents a crucial step towards strengthening international relations based on principles of equality, mutual respect and sustainable development. Furthermore, Indonesia expressed gratitude to Russia, who holds the BRICS presidency in 2024, for its decisive support and leadership in facilitating Indonesia’s integration into the group.

For its part, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that Indonesia, as the most populous country in Southeast Asia, shares with the other BRICS members the determination to reform global governance institutions.
