Indonesia accuses Israel of "placing itself above" international law by attacking UNIFIL

Indonesian representative to the UN: “Israel’s apparent lack of a moral compass is truly appalling”

Oct. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Indonesia has attacked Israel this Thursday for the attack by its Army against the personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at the Naqura facilities, where the headquarters is located, as a result of which two Indonesian soldiers have been injured. , and has denounced that the Israeli authorities “place themselves above International Law.”

“The indiscriminate attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which injured two of our peacekeepers, clearly demonstrate how Israel has placed itself above international law, impunity and our shared values. We strongly condemn this violation. Israel’s apparent lack of a moral compass is truly appalling,” Indonesia’s UN representative Hari Prabowo told the Security Council.

The diplomat stressed that “Israel has committed another violation of the United Nations Charter, another affront to International Humanitarian Law with its direct attacks against peacekeepers.” “It is a dark day for the multilateralism of international peace: the ‘blue helmets’ are being directly attacked,” he lamented.

Hari has maintained that Israel’s actions against UNIFIL “represent a blatant attempt to sow terror on the ground to intimidate both the peacekeeping mission and the international community.” “This is unacceptable. And let me be clear: those who defend the cause of peace will never fear the aggressors and perpetrators of genocide,” he declared before reminding the parties of their obligation to ensure the full protection of UN personnel and property. .

Likewise, he has considered that “Israel’s continued challenge to International Law requires immediate action”, while taking the opportunity to mention that this attack occurred “in the midst of a broader pattern of violations” of resolution 1701 of the Security Council. Security, such as “repeated incursions into Lebanese territory, violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon.”

On the other hand, he has indicated that Indonesia, as the main contributor of troops to UNIFIL (1,230 out of a total of 10,050 of dozens of nationalities), underlines its “firm and full support” for the mission and the rest of the peacekeepers. Jakarta, “despite the scandalous attacks,” remains “firmly” committed to working with the UN, the international community and the mission in “de-escalation efforts and the prospect of lasting peace in the region.”

Finally, the Indonesian representative urged the Security Council to act “decisively” to ensure that UNIFIL can continue its “vital work” in southern Lebanon. “Our peacekeepers have fulfilled their mandates. Please ensure that the Council also fulfills its mandates,” he requested.

UNIFIL announced during the day that two of its troops (Indonesian nationals) have been injured by the impact of an Israeli projectile on its facilities in Naqura, where its headquarters are located, after in recent hours the UNIFIL Defense of Israel (IDF) have reached several positions of this international contingent.

The attack is part of an escalation of crossfire between Israeli forces and the Shiite group Hezbollah, within which the IDF has carried out a ground incursion that has led it to surpass the Blue Line that delimits the border between the two countries.

The Naqura barracks and other nearby positions have been “repeatedly” affected by the attacks and the UNIFIL has confirmed shots fired by the Israeli Army against the entrance to a bunker in Labuné where ‘blue helmets’ were taking refuge, which has caused damage. to vehicles and a communications system.
