As those interested will already know, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a first-person “cinematic action-adventure” game developed by MachineGames (Wolfenstein), whose story is set between the events of Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the last crusade. The objective is to put players in the shoes of the famous archaeologist, who together with his felt hat and whip will travel the planet in search of the Great Circle, a stolen piece that hides a secret capable of putting the entire world in check. The antagonist is Emmerich Voss, an archaeologist searching for mysterious artifacts.
According to Pete Ward of MachineGames, “the essence of this game is adventure.” The development team wants to make exploring rewarding, so they have invested a lot of resources into creating the scenarios to encourage players to uncover clues, find valuable items, and reveal secrets that can be useful during the journey. Sometimes to make your way it will be necessary to use the traditional Indy tools. They are all available in the game and the scenarios themselves offer opportunities, but how to use these elements to explore or knock out enemies will depend on the ingenuity of each one.
As they progress through their adventure, players will fill the pages of a journal that acts as a guide. At first it will be blank, but little by little it will become the chronicle of the trip, with maps, photographs and letters.
The Indiana Jones and the Great Circle campaign takes place in linear, mission-focused areas, but the game also allows you to explore various regions to undertake side quests and reveal new mysteries. By completing missions, both main story and optional, the player will earn adventure points that will be used to improve Indy’s skills. To unlock new skills you have to search for adventure books scattered around the world. For example, the Lucky Hat ability shown in the video offers a second chance to continue fighting after being knocked out.
The whip is introduced as Indiana’s best friend. Not only is it essential for advancing through the environment thanks to the possibilities it offers when moving and solving puzzles, but it is also an excellent tool for combat. Although the archaeologist has his revolver, sometimes the smartest thing is to resort to the whip and his fists. There will also be situations where it is best to avoid combat, while in others it will be necessary to disguise yourself to cross areas full of enemies.
