Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh traveled to the Russian city of Kaliningrad on Monday to attend a handover ceremony for a guided missile frigate built in a Russian shipyard as part of strengthening cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow. in terms of security.
“The ship is a proud testament to India’s growing maritime strength and an important milestone in long-standing bilateral relations with Russia,” the Indian Defense Minister underlined in a message posted on the X social network.
The frigate is part of an agreement signed in 2016 between New Delhi and Moscow to deliver four ships to the Indian Navy. Singh is expected to meet during the day with his Russian counterpart, Andrei Belousov, with whom he will discuss increasing defense cooperation between the two countries.
The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, is expected to travel to India in early 2025. Modi last met with the Russian leader during the BRICS summit held last October in the city of Kazan.
India has tried to move away from explicit criticism of Moscow and has not supported sanctions imposed by the West in retaliation for the Ukrainian conflict. New Delhi has also increased its imports of cheap oil from Russia, making it the country’s second largest customer after China.
