New Delhi ( / Agencies) – An Indian citizen is among those killed in clashes that began two days ago in Sudan, where the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary militia is fighting against the local army.
The Indian embassy in Khartoum released the name of the victim, Albert Augustine, 48, originally from Nellippara, in the Kannur district of the Indian state of Kerala. According to him indian expressthe man had been discharged from the Indian army and in 2022 began working as head of security for DAL Group, a Sudanese industrial conglomerate that is involved in various sectors of the country: agriculture, food, energy and education.
Augustine was on the phone with his son when he was hit by a stray bullet that entered through his apartment window. A few days earlier, his family had joined him in Sudan for a short Passover vacation.
Since Saturday there have been shootings, shelling and explosions throughout the Sudanese capital. The two military factions are fighting over the presidential palace and the city’s airport and all flights have been blocked for two days. According to the doctors, so far there have been a balance of 50 victims and almost 600 injured.
The situation in Sudan arouses concern, particularly in New Delhi, due to the presence of at least 4,000 Indian citizens in the country. Some 1,200 Indians have lived in Khartoum for several decades. On Saturday April 15, the Indian embassy had issued a statement urging all its citizens not to leave their homes and to take precautions with immediate effect.
