Xbox Series X|S owners can enjoy multi-generation games natively as well as an extensive library of titles via emulation. Gamers have found ways to expand the reach of systems and now someone managed to run Windows 98 on consoles.
It’s a cool experiment that will let users run a wide variety of classic PC titles on their next-gen hardware. Alex Battaglia, member of Digital Foundryshowed that it is possible to install the operating system to enjoy classics like quake, half life Y Command & Conquer just like on a PC of the time.

Xbox Series X|S can without problems with Windows 98 and its games
Battaglia revealed that his project was made possible because the DOSBox Pure core of the RetroArch emulator recently received official support for Windows 98. He stated that the process of installing the operating system and games is a bit complicated, but clarifies that the results are incredible and you can even have emulated support for 3dfx Voodoo Graphics.
This experiment turned out so well that it is possible to use an Xbox Series X|S as a conventional computer of the time. Not only can you play, it is also possible to open other programs such as word processors.
The problems come when configuring the controls for the titles, as there is limited support for playing with a mouse, so the control is still the best option. As you can imagine, the games run without any performance or sound issues.
Battaglia clarified that the full potential of consoles is not really being used; however, the results are very good considering that in certain cases a hardware must first be emulated (3dfx), then the operating system itself, a programming interface and other processes before rendering pixels. The effort is worth it even with an Xbox Series S, which leaves nothing to be desired compared to its more powerful counterpart.
Of course not everything is perfect, because in addition to the cumbersome installation process there are also some complications with certain animations. Despite this, Battaglia concludes that the new generation consoles can handle Windows 98 and the golden age of PC gaming. Below you can see a video about it:
