Just as the monthly import of containers from China to Mexico has grown by 60%, the main Pacific ports, such as Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas, have registered record movements, contributing to the total increase in the volume of trade between the two countries, but with challenges to carry out successful logistics.
“The situation right now in the Pacific became critical, because I don’t think anyone expected us to have the amount of growth that there was in the first quarter of the year, that was a very big impact. And that’s where the infrastructure part comes in. The problem with the ports is due to the government, it has to be State policy, an investment in a port takes years to develop and the port infrastructure has to be thought of as a State policy for 30 years, not for each six-year term,” he assures. This is reinforced by official figures. Between January and April of this year, through Mexican ports as a whole, 2,952,195 TEUs were operated, which translates into an increase of 18.2% compared to the same period of the previous year, when 2,496,977 TEUs were handled, according to the data. of the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM).
73% of the total was operated along the Pacific, where the ports of Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas and Ensenada concentrated 2,118,178 containers, that is, 98.2% of the total coastline.
