Important international congress will be held in Chile: promoting Operations Research for excellence in decision-making

IFORS announces the holding of its twenty-third world conference, which will take place from July 10 to 14, 2023 in Santiago, Chile, corresponding to the first time in the country and the second in Latin America, held in 1987, Argentina. The event will bring together leading researchers, academics and professionals in Operations Research from different parts of the world.

Daniela Miranda, Journalist.- IFORS is the International Federation of Operational Research Societies, a global association that brings together more than 50 national societies from various countries, all of them on the subject of Operational Research (IO). “Now, what is IO? In short, it is a scientific discipline that makes use of mathematical models to support decision making in complex problems. It is what today many call "analytics" (analytics) and uses many tools that come from Data Science, optimization, applied mathematics, etc. It is mixed with the disciplines of Management Sciences, of course, and is present in everything that involves complex problems where decisions have to be made and scarce resources allocated: companies, governments, etc.”, says Jorge Vera, co -chair of the conference, professor of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Systems of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

The IFORS Chile 2023 conference is organized by the Institute for Complex Engineering Systems and the Chilean Institute for Operations Research, with the support of the University of Chile and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The activities will be carried out at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Chile and the Extension Center of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. This event provides a unique platform for sharing knowledge, presenting cutting-edge research, and discussing the latest advances in the field of Operations Research.

In the words of Susana Mondschein, President of ICHIO, researcher at the Instituto Sistemas Complejos de Ingeniería, ISCI, and academic at the Department of Industrial Engineering, DII, Universidad de Chile: “The IFORS triennial conference plays an essential role in bringing together the academic community providing a favorable space to exchange knowledge, foster collaboration and apply Operations Research in a practical way in various areas of national and international development.”

Participants will have the opportunity to explore new trends, innovative applications and best practices that are transforming the way complex challenges are addressed in various sectors.

The conference program will include a wide range of plenary sessions, panel discussions and technical presentations addressing key topics such as optimization, supply chain planning, operations management, data analysis, simulation and decision making under uncertainty.

IFORS Chile 2023 will have the participation of renowned national and international experts in Operations Research, who will share their experience and cutting-edge knowledge. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with leaders in the field, network professionally, and explore potential collaborations on research projects and practical applications.

As Andrés Weintraub, IFORS plenary speaker, ISCI researcher and academic at the University of Chile, points out: “The effort that the country has made with the University of Chile and the Catholic University together with ISCI, to hold a world-class congress with the demand that it has is a no lesser task. IFORS has been done in developed countries, the exceptions being Argentina, Brazil and South Africa. With our participation in the 80’s we began to make ourselves known together with the appearance in European congresses and in the United States.”

IFORS 2023 will receive more than 900 people who come from all over the world, there are 60 countries represented at the conference. The attendees are researchers at universities, in industry, graduate students, people who are driving analytics everywhere. “It is a high-volume conference and all the topics of our discipline are covered. We have theoretical papers in the field of AI or Operations Research and many presentations of applied papers in different areas such as retail, natural resources, natural disasters as well, and technologies to improve health and its management, among many others. We have close to 30 presentations in parallel at the congress”, adds Rafael Epstein, co-chair of IFORS, ISCI researcher and academic of the DII of the University of Chile.

The Complex Systems Engineering Institute, ISCI, plays a very relevant role, as Jorge Vera points out: “ISCI has dedicated a good part of its research and development precisely to the topics of this conference. The contributions that the institute’s researchers and professionals have made in creating better tools to address complex problems have been enormous and are internationally recognized. Many of the ISCI researchers are, in fact, participating in the conference, showing their work and the contributions they have made.”

Rafael Epstein concludes: “ISCI’s research activity is at the center of what the scientific societies associated with IFORS do. It is lucky to have such an active institute in these disciplines because it allowed us to approach the realization of the conference with their support. It is very possible that without the ISCI it would not have been possible to apply for or organize an event of this magnitude.”

Finally, as a positive externality, these international congresses also stimulate the spread of knowledge of Chile abroad, as well as local tourism.
