Imam shot dead in southern Iranian city of Kazerun

MADRID 25 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Authorities in Iran have confirmed the shooting death of Mohamed Sabahi, the imam of the main mosque in the southern city of Kazerun, located in the Iranian province of Fars, shortly after performing Friday prayers.

The city’s governor, Mohamed Ali Bejrod, has stated that the attacker shot the imam for “personal reasons”, although he has ruled out that it was a terrorist attack. The authorities have opened an investigation into this matter.

After being injured by bullets, the imam was taken by helicopter to the city of Shiraz to receive medical treatment, although he eventually died. For his part, the shooter has taken his own life, according to Iranian news agencies.

Sabahi succeeded Mohamed Jorsand in office, who died in 2018 after being stabbed while returning home. He is the third imam killed in Kazerun in these strange circumstances since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
