IDF fires tear gas at Hezbollah supporters at Lebanese border on Quds Day

14 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have launched tear gas and stun grenades against dozens of supporters of the Lebanese Shiite party-militia Hezbollah who have demonstrated near the border between Lebanon and Israel on the occasion of Quds Day, the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

Quds Day, instituted by Ayatollah Ruholah Khomeini in 1979, is a mobilization held on the last Friday of Ramadan to commemorate the Palestinian resistance and condemn the Israeli occupation, as well as US domination.

Coinciding with this day, nearly 130,000 Muslim faithful have attended this noon Friday prayers in the Esplanade of the Mosques, the scene in recent weeks of tensions with the Israeli Police, although during the day there have been no incidents, except for a few arrests of Palestinian protesters for chanting inciting violence.

In the framework of Quds Day, the leader of Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah, has stated that the Israeli Army did not bomb any of its structures during the recent exchange of rockets with southern Lebanon, which demonstrates the “weakness” of Israel, has picked up the Maan news agency.

This comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed on Thursday that Israel had struck targets of both the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Hezbollah, thus contradicting intelligence reports that these airstrikes against the Lebanese Shiite party-militia would only bring the region closer to a major conflict with Iran.
