Another traditional music network will soon bite the dust.
Sam Goody, the music and entertainment retail chain founded in 1951, will soon close its two remaining locations: Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Rogue Valley Mall in Medford, Oregon.
According WTRFthe Ohio Valley Mall location will close in February 2025. A date for the Oregon closure has not yet been given. Sam Goody stores were a staple in shopping malls in the United States and the United Kingdom during the 1980s and 1990s.
Various factors, such as massive closure of shopping centersmusic streaming, the disadvantages of physical media, and poor management of funds led to the brand’s demise. In 2001, Best Buy bought MusiclandSan Goody’s parent company, later selling it in 2003. As Musicland struggled and eventually declared bankruptcy, it was bought by Trans World Entertainment in 2006.
Upon acquiring 400 Musicland stores, the company decided to rebrand 345 of them as the shrinking brick-and-mortar entertainment franchise, FYE.
In 2020, Trans World sold FYE parent company to Sunrise Records for $10 million. If you can get to the Ohio location before it closes, prices are currently reduced until then.
