The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said on Monday that he was heading to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, in the area of Ukraine under the control of Russian military forces.
“I am heading to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine to continue our assistance and prevent a nuclear accident,” Grossi posted in a message on his account on the social network X.
“It has been two years since we established the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia to help ensure nuclear safety at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” he added.
The IAEA announced on Monday that Grossi had visited the nuclear power plant, which has been the subject of frequent accusations of attacks between Russia and Ukraine.
Grossi warned in mid-August that the security situation was “deteriorating” after an explosion was detected near the plant, which IAEA experts attributed to a possible drone loaded with explosives.
