Phil Spencer talks about redfall and his failure
“There is nothing more difficult for me than disappointing the Xbox community. I’ve been a part of it for a long time. Just seeing the community lose trust and get disappointed, I’m disappointed. I’m upset with myself,” Spencer said during the interview .
The manager accepted that they have to improve some processes to guarantee the quality and proper development of their games. He also touched on the issue of the deficiencies of redfall and whether a delay would have saved the game from disaster.
“Maybe it’s a bit simplistic to just say, hey, if you had pushed it back 3 months, the creative core of the game would have delivered something different than what it was. At some point we have to have a creative vision and get the game out. Our reviewers and players will tell us what they think.”
From his perspective, things aren’t that simple, and he hinted that giving more time for development doesn’t always guarantee something. On the other hand, he said that they are committed to creative freedom and know that Arkane can do great things.
“Clearly there are quality and execution things we can do, but one thing I’m not going to do is go against the creative aspirations of our teams. I’m a huge supporter of Arkane Austin, his track record is impressive, I love a lot of of the games they have created,” added the Xbox boss.
recognized that redfall it fell short of Xbox’s expectations for internal metrics. Despite this, they will not abandon it and will work on adjustments to improve the current state of the title.
“We are going to continue working on the game. We have shown a commitment to games like sea of thieves and Grounded, to continue building games. But I also know that these games cost $70, and I’m going to take full responsibility for releasing a game that has to be great,” Spencer concluded.
