Due to the fact that preventive maintenance could not be carried out on the El Guavio Hydroelectric Power Plantdue to the blockades that exist in the municipality of Ubalá, in the early hours of this Tuesday, September 13, another turbine of the plant was turned off and, if it continues like this, another one will come out of operation tomorrow.

This time, generation unit number 4 (250 MW) stopped working due to the impossibility of carrying out its preventive maintenance and tomorrow unit 2 (250 MW) will stop working for the same reason.
This would imply that in total, they would have ceased to be available five units of El Guavio, four majors and one minor. This is how the largest hydroelectric plant in the country will be operating with 255 MW of the 1,260 MW of its installed capacity. That is, only 20%.
“This situation represents a risk for the reliability and security of the National Interconnected System (SIN), since it must make use of other generation assets to meet the energy demand of the different regions of the country. While we respect the community’s right to free social protest, we reiterate that these avenues should not in fact jeopardize the provision of an essential public service for Colombians.”, stated Eugenio Calderón, manager of electricity generation at Enel.

The risk of a blackout would have an impact on Bogota, Cundinamarca and Meta.
Why do the demonstrations continue?
Since last August 15, there have been demonstrations by the community that is dissatisfied with the poor state of the roads in the territory, whose maintenance is in charge of the Government of Boyacá and that of Cundinamarca.
Despite this, Enel Colombia assures that it has participated in all the dialogue tables and meetings that have been held to agree on actions that allown Contribute to road development in the region. However, to date, the community has not accepted the various proposals presented by public entities and private companies, in view of their expectation of paving the road.
In the case of Enel, the company claims to be willing to contribute financial resources and its yellow machinery in order to improve the roads.
(See: Bogotá Metro: this will be the commission that will monitor the works).
“These contributions would be added to those that Enel annually makes, proactively and voluntarily, in corrective repairs on roads, removal of trees and landslides, loading and transfer of material, and cleaning and recovery of sewers. So far in 2022 alone, Enel has carried out nearly 70 actions of this type”, says the company through a statement.
