Hurricane Kirk reached Category 3 in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday and is expected to continue strengthening rapidly, meteorologists reported.
There were no coastal advisories or alerts in effect. The meteor is not yet considered to threaten land.
The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported on Kirk’s new category. It was located about 1,855 kilometers (1,150 miles) east-northeast of the Lesser Antilles, with maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (120 miles per hour).
It is moving northwest at 19 km/h (12 mph). This week it is expected to make a gradual turn in a north-northwest direction.
Swells generated by the storm could affect portions of the northern Windward Islands and Bermuda by the weekend, likely causing “life-threatening” surf and rip conditions, the NHC said.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Leslie formed Wednesday night in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and could reach hurricane status by the weekend, forecasters said.
At the moment there were no coastal warnings or alerts in force and the system is not yet considered a threat to land.
The storm is located about 790 kilometers (490 miles) southwest of the southern tip of the Cape Verde Islands and has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph), the NHC said.
