President Joe Biden declared a major state of emergency in Florida due to the devastating passage of Hurricane Ian.
“This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida history. The figures are not yet clear, but we are hearing the first reports of what may be a substantial loss of life.
The disaster declaration will allow federal aid to be prioritized to complete recovery efforts in the most affected areas, while the priority of the Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, is search and rescue missions.
“Search and rescue missions are already being carried out in the affected areas by land, air and sea. We have teams that make sure that critical health facilities, like hospitals and adult care centers, have the support they need to care for their patients, or evacuate them if necessary.”
Biden did not rule out that the situation warrants the approval of additional funds by Congress.
At the same time, the recovery plans are already underway, announced the FEMA administrator.
“An interagency recovery group is already planning for long-term recovery needs, such as housing, debris removal, and critical infrastructure repair, as we know it will be a complex recovery.”
The federal government is not losing sight of the existing threats from the storm as it passes through the states of Georgia and South Carolina.
