September 6 () –
Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Friday condemned Ukraine’s plans to use weapons supplied by Western countries to attack Russian territory, saying this could lead to a “dangerous” escalation and increased violence.
Szijjarto said Hungary, on the other hand, prefers a diplomatic solution to the military conflict, and remains the only country in the European Union and NATO that has not delivered weapons to Ukraine since the invasion began more than two years ago.
He said that “more weapons mean a longer war, more deaths and greater destruction,” as stated by government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs in a message posted on his social network X account.
Hungarian authorities, who in May opposed a NATO mission to train Ukrainian soldiers, citing “global war risks”, have allowed the free movement of weapons from third countries through their territory to Ukraine to fight against Russia.
The Russian government has repeatedly stressed that Western countries are “playing with fire” by supplying these weapons to Ukrainian forces and has stressed that foreign convoys are a “legitimate target” for Russian troops.
