How to vote in the 2024 US elections from outside the country: requirements and deadlines

( Spanish) – American citizens living outside the country can vote in the November 5, 2024 elections, in which the presidential formula that will occupy the White House for the next four years will be decided.

In addition to the election for president and vice president, Americans will also vote for some seats in Congress, for governors in 13 states and for multiple local offices.

If you are a US citizen and want to vote in the 2024 federal elections, we tell you what the requirements and key dates are to do so.

All U.S. citizens living outside the country who are 18 years old or older can vote in the November 5 election by requesting an absentee ballot from their local jurisdiction or through the Federal Voter Assistance Program (FVAP, for its acronym in English).

For this, it is necessary follow the following steps:

  1. Fill the Federal Postal Card application (FPCA) to register and request your ballot here.
  2. Send the FPCA to your elections office. The deadlines to register and send it They depend on each state. For general elections, it is best to send it before August 1.
  3. It is recommended that you submit a new FPCA every January or each time you move to receive your ballot at least 45 days before the election. The FPCA acts as a registration and application form for voting by mail.
  4. Once you receive your ballot (for the general election you should receive it in early October), follow the instructions sent to mark it and mail it back in an envelope. Envelope templates are available for download online at FVAP.gov.
  5. Be sure to check with your state when the deadline to submit is.
  6. Check if your ballot was received by your election office.

If you requested your ballot but did not receive it, you will need to contact your election office to ask about the status of your request.

If you do not have enough time to receive and return your ballot before the election, you can use the Federal Absentee Ballot (FWAB). It works like a reserve ticket. If your official absentee ballot arrives after you submit the FWAB, fill out and submit the official absentee ballot as well. Only one will be counted.
