Let’s explain to you How to know if you live in a flood zone using a service that the Government of Spain has been offering for years. This is a website where you can see on the map of Spain which are the most flood-prone areas in the country in a period of 10, 100 or 500 years.
This will allow you to make a query about the next 10 years, and you can navigate the map, zoom in and look at the area where you live or any other area of Spain. The areas most likely to flood in the event of too much rain will be marked in blue on the map.
How to know if you live in a flood zone
The first thing you have to do is enter the section National Flood Zone Mapping System from the website of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The address to go directly to this tool is sig.mapama.gob.es/snczi/index.html?herramienta=DPHZI.
Now, at the top of the screen you have to click on the section Service treewhich is the third from the right. This will take you to a menu, where you have to go into Areas of significant potential flood riskand inside open a folder Floods of river originand then go to Hazard maps. You can also search directly for the word Dangerousness.
Inside here, you will see several options that you can load from Danger due to river flooding. We recommend the one that says T=10 yearssince it is the one that tells you the areas with possibility of flooding in the next 10 years. Double click to load the map, and then you can zoom in to explore the areas.
Zooming is a bit strange on this map. Click on the magnifying glass icon, and then drag the mouse to select the area of the map you want. Then deactivate the magnifying glass and you can move around the map. You can filter the search by autonomous community, province or channel, although you don’t need to complicate things because it will load everything on the map. And so, you can see the risk areas in blue which will possibly flood in the event that another unusually strong Dana arrives.
