() — Catastrophic flooding in eastern Kentucky has killed at least 16 people and could leave hundreds homeless. Governor Andy Beshear warned that the death toll is expected to rise and that the destruction is far from over.
Heavy rain and flooding took residents by surprise overnight Wednesday. Some houses were even completely lost in less than an hour.
More than 9 inches of rain fell in some areas of eastern Kentucky and more is expected in the coming days.
Governor Beshear established the Eastern Kentucky Team Flood Relief Fund in order to assist those affected.
