The strong frontal rain system forecast for this weekend in Chile began to wreak havoc in the south of the country, leaving more than 100,000 people without electricity and more than a hundred houses affected, authorities reported on Saturday.
“Roof blasting and falling trees have been reported as a result of strong winds, as well as leaks into homes and flooding due to rainfall” due to the frontal system planned between the regions of Coquimbo (central-north) and Los Lagos (southern country), the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Service, SENAPRED, reported on Twitter in its last part at dawn.
It reported more than 102,301 people without electricity supply in all the mentioned regions and a total of 105 houses with damages as a result of the rains, six with major damage, 58 with minor damage and 41 in emergency housing, provided by the government to the people who were affected by the raging fires in the south of the country in February.
Most of the houses affected were in the Biobío region, some 500 kilometers south of Santiago, while nine of the 41 damaged emergency houses belonged to the Ñuble region, more than 400 kilometers south of Santiago, others from those affected by the fires.
The forecast of the Chilean Meteorological Directorate foresees a frontal rain system from Friday afternoon to Sunday, in which a fall of between 35 and 70 millimeters is expected for the regions of Maule, Ñuble and Biobío, while in the La Araucanía Region, further south, would be between 50-90 for the Precordillera area.
