Manufacturers are betting on increasingly lighter phones, an example of this is the future iPhone 17 Air that Apple is working on. Other manufacturers such as Honor opt for larger screens with Samsung-style rollable models.
Folding mobile phones have gained ground in the industry, despite somewhat negative forecasts for 2025 with a drop in production. Honor has preferred to take a less risky step and works on a rollable mobile phone inspired by the Galaxy Z Roll prototype.
The Chinese brand has registered the patent for a roll-up mobile phone, or sliding phone as they have called it in the text. Honor could get ahead of the Z Roll expected at the end of next year or the project Motorola is working on if the rumors are confirmed.
The mechanism takes the best of folding mobiles
Honor has registered a prototype of a new rolling mechanism that would allow a screen width similar to that offered by the hinges on folding phones. The design has a fixed part and another that slides on one of the sides.
The Chinese manufacturer has designed an internal system of elastic beams that deploy to expand the diagonal of the screen. Honor has not confirmed more information about the movement, but the sketches indicate that it would have a linear motor coupled to a scissor-type mechanism that drives the system.
The brand’s prototype has some potential, but this flexible screen will first have to pass tests to obtain certification. The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) has approved this patent, although does not guarantee that Honor will launch this device on the marketcollect Phone Arena.
The Chinese manufacturer has a good track record in devices of this style with models such as the Honor Magic V3, the lightest and thinnest foldable in the world. The brand has the potential to become the first to achieve a roll-up mobile phone with almost imperceptible folds.
Samsung follows closely with the possible launch of Galaxy Z Roll with rollable screen in the second half of 2025if the company’s forecasts are met. The South Korean manufacturer could prepare a joint announcement with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Z Flip 7.
