Hong Kong’s Palm Sunday procession meets strict requirements for demonstrations

2 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

This Sunday the traditional Palm Sunday procession was held in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, despite the restrictions imposed by the authorities, which have forced attendees to identify themselves by wearing a red bracelet, carrying a palm and not necessarily wearing a mask.

The procession was organized by the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, but has had to comply with the strict regulations on public events imposed as a result of the controversial National Security Law.

“It’s a religious act. I think it doesn’t need to be so complicated. It’s just a one-minute tour,” one of the attendees told public television RTHK.

Specifically, he has indicated that those who are used to wearing a mask could feel uncomfortable with the rule that prohibits face coverings. The Police have argued that what is intended is to prevent attendees from making their identification difficult. Despite everything, some of the participants have worn a mask.

Other participants have expressed their satisfaction at being able to resume this type of act, which has been prohibited since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Police have warned in the final authorization document that attendees must comply with current legislation, including the National Security Law.
