Hong Kong encourages vaccination of children against COVID-19

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong government is conducting a series of promotional and educational activities to make parents more aware of the importance of vaccinating children against COVID-19.

The first parent-child workshop was held in a kindergarten in Ma On Shan, where dozens of parents and their children have participated to learn more about COVID-19 vaccines through games and explanations from an expert.

Hong Kong Public Administration Secretary Ingrid Yeung and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, University of Hong Kong Medical School, Dr. Mike Kwan, attended the workshop to make a first-hand appeal to parents to get their young children vaccinated against COVID-19 on time.

Yeung said that “children 6 months and older can already receive the COVID-19 vaccine since last month. Until now, the vaccination rate of children under 3 years of age is about 16%.”

“We understand that some parents remain concerned and so we will be going to campuses to host parent-child workshops starting today in the hope that parents and their children can learn more about the benefits of vaccines by playing together.”

“Experts have repeatedly warned that mutant strains of the COVID-19 virus can attack your brain, a situation that can be deadly. Although the number of confirmed cases has decreased slightly these days, children should be vaccinated soon to reduce the risk of death, serious illness or serious sequelae.

He added that “I hope that parents listen to more opinions from experts and never underestimate the threat of the coronavirus. They should get their children vaccinated as soon as possible so that they are well protected before winter approaches.’”

Hong Kong plans to continue these activities until November in different kindergartens.
