Honduras and the UN agree to reestablish anti-corruption commission

The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, signed a joint agreement with the United Nations on Thursday to direct the fight against impunity and anti-corruption

“As President of Honduras, together with the UN Secretary, Antonio Guterres, we will install the independent and fair CICIH. We reached agreements for the selection of international experts to investigate the high-impact public-private corruption networks that have plundered the country,” said the Central American president in a tweet.

Called the International Mission against Corruption and Impunity (CICIH), the mechanism is the second of its kind installed in Honduras after the departure of the previous OAS anti-corruption mission that left the country in 2020.

The agreement was praised by the US ambassador to Honduras, Laura Dogu, who called the move “a very important and historic first step.”

The previous mission was established in 2016 and its effectiveness even helped to uncover criminal cases related to the environment of the then president, Juan Orlando Hernández, who at the end of his term at the beginning of this year was extradited to the United States under charges of drug trafficking.

Today’s agreements were signed in New York in the presence of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and the UN’s Deputy Secretary, Miroslav Jenca.

From Honduras, the investigative work carried out by the National Anti-Corruption Council (CNA) also contributes, which has prepared detailed studies on figures, groups and specific cases of alleged corruption in the country, as learned last May. after the initial steps.
