More than 170,000 serious crimes were reported in New York City last year, according to the latest report from the police department. These are the highest figures since 2006 when the statistics began to be made public. Many residents say they no longer feel safe.

“I was coming home from work on the train and I fell asleep, I was tired and when I woke up I no longer had my bag, the waistbands on it were torn, all my documents were lost,” says Steven, a New York resident.

Crimes such as car and property theft, strangulation and possession of dangerous weapons have increased by more than 20% compared to 2021. Armed violence and crimes on the train have been the priorities to combat by the local government.

“That they escort the boys to take them home with the police, it’s like wow what’s happening, it’s more I went into a school and at the school the gentlemen who are at the door are policemen it’s like talking to the policeman trying to get them to The boys don’t carry… there is a metal detector even in the portal, what is happening, are they carrying weapons, knives, pistols? They are already putting up portals to be able to detect metals, and the police are at the entrances,” adds Luis, who also lives in the Big Apple.

An additional 80 million dollars were injected into the budget to hire more prosecutors and identify what has led to the increase in criminal cases dismissed under the reforms in the penal system.

Crime continued to rise this year with a 4.1% increase in the month of January compared to the same time period last year, according to police department statistics. Angela Gonzalez, voice of americaNY.
