Higher education costs increased during the first half of 2024

The National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) presented the results of the Higher Education Cost Index (ICES) corresponding to the first half of 2024. In this indicator, an increase to 6.55% was recorded during that period.

According to the Colombian statistical office, The rate was 1.19 percentage points higher than that registered in the second half of 2023, which closed at 5.26%.

The group of costs with the greatest semiannual variation was personnel expenses which registered a variation of 7.17%, being 0.17 percentage points higher than the variation observed in the second half of 2023, which was 7%.

Now, with respect to the group of purchases of goods and services, registered a semiannual variation of 5.07%, being 3.42 percentage points higher than that registered in the second half of 2023 which was weighted at 1.65%.

Taking into account the type of costs, the Dane reported that The greatest contributions were from professors and researchers other than professorial hours, which increased to 8.02%, professors’ teaching hours rose to 6.03%, the managerial and professional level rose to 6.82%, the technical and administrative level rose to 8.02%, and fees rose to 6.87%.

Furthermore, the smallest contributions were made in air tickets (-10.48%), stationery (-7.45%), computer and communication equipment (-3.42%) and office equipment (-2.75%).

Compared to the first half of 2023, The annual variation of the ICES for the first six months of this year was 12.26%. For this reason, this result is 3.80 percentage points higher than that recorded in the annual variation of the index for the first half of 2023, which was 8.46%.
