The Lebanese Ministry of Health estimates the number of dead at 20 and the number of injured at 450.
September 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah confirmed early Thursday morning the death of 16 of its members, one of them a minor, following the new wave of explosions of communication devices in Lebanon, which has resulted in 20 dead and 450 injured, according to data from the country’s Ministry of Health.
Hezbollah has published the names of 16 “martyrs”, including a 16-year-old identified as Abdul Moneim Yamal ‘Malak’, according to the Lebanese television channel Al Manar, which is close to the Islamist group.
The Ministry of Health has also raised the death toll, previously estimated at 14, from the explosions of walkie-talkies and other electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptops recorded both in Beirut and in the rest of Lebanon, which have caused numerous fires in homes and vehicles.
Emergency services are also working to transport the wounded to hospitals during another day of chaos in the country, as the previous day was marked by another wave of explosions by thousands of ‘pagers’ belonging to alleged members of Hezbollah, which resulted in twelve deaths, two of them children, and some 2,800 wounded.
Both the Lebanese authorities and Hezbollah have claimed that Tuesday’s explosions were the work of Israel and have assured that there will be a response, although the Israeli government has not yet commented on the matter. Despite not commenting on these incidents, Israel’s Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, has insisted once again that “the centre of gravity” of its operations is increasingly on the northern border, and has spoken of a “new phase” of the war.
