The general secretary of the Shiite party-militia acknowledges that he has lost the arms supply route via Damascus
Dec. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The general secretary of the Lebanese Shiite party-militia Hezbollah, Naim Qasem, asked this Saturday the new Syrian authorities, represented mainly by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham, to take up arms against Israel, which currently occupies the demilitarized zone. of the Golan Heights and has launched airstrikes in several parts of the country to destroy arsenals abandoned by the former regime of deposed former president Bashar al Assad.
Hezbollah has participated in the Syrian civil war as an ally of Al Assad along with Russia and Iran (the great ally of the Lebanese militias) but the conflict against Israel in Lebanon led the group to focus on the fights against the Israeli Army. . This abandonment, together with that of Russia due to the war in Ukraine, greatly facilitated the jihadist and rebel offensive that ended on Sunday with the taking of the Syrian capital, Damascus, and the flight of Al Assad and his family, now in Russia.
In this situation, Qasem indicated this Sunday that the situation in the country remains enormously chaotic and has refrained from “passing judgments” on these new authorities — who have promised an immediate transition and reached out to Russia and Iran — “until they stabilize and adopt a clear position.”
Regarding Israel, Qasem has asked “the new regime in Syria consider the Israeli Army an enemy and “not be satisfied with its presence” in Syrian territory.
On the other hand, the leader of Hezbollah has confirmed that the fall of the Al Assad regime represents the loss of the Lebanese organization’s “military supply” “through Syria”, although he has downplayed this “detail”.
“The resistance is flexible and the important thing is its continuity,” he added before stating that the current situation in Syria “should not have any effect” in Lebanon beyond what was mentioned and conveyed his wish that Syria “achieve stability in in accordance with the wishes of his people,” according to his speech, reported by the Al Mayadeen network.
