Head of Ethiopia's National Disaster Management Commission arrested for alleged corruption

July 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Ethiopian authorities have arrested the head of the Ethiopian National Disaster Management Commission (NDRMC), Mitiku Kassa, for alleged corruption over alleged collusion with an NGO to divert funds.

The deputy commissioner of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ethiopian Federal Police, Tadesse Ayalew, has indicated that Mitiku is suspected of collusion with the head of the organization Elshadai Relief and Development Association (ERDA), according to the newspaper ‘Addis Standard’.

Thus, it has detailed that this NGO is suspected of embezzling funds obtained through the sale of food aid and clothing sent to non-existent displaced persons camps in the Awash, Adama, Hawassa and Injibara areas with the aim of buying a house for Mitiku.

The figure of Mitiku, who has headed the NDRMC since 2015, has gained weight in recent years in the country and in December 2019 he was appointed a member of the High-Level Panel on Internally Displaced Persons of the Secretary General of the United Nations.
