HBO Max premieres in August 2022: all the new series, movies and documentaries

'The House of the Dragon': everything we know so far about the 'Game of Thrones' prequel on HBO

August is not synonymous with a slowdown for streaming platforms. This month we have some of the most outstanding events in the field of cinema and series, starting above all with ‘The House of the Dragon’, the powerful first spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’ -which can also be seen in 4K quality from on August 1-. The prequel to the great phenomenon of the past decade will be a litmus test for Warner’s service to make that final leap between the big ones like Netflix or Disney +. These are the HBO Max news for this month.

‘The House of the Dragon’

That said, ‘The House of the Dragon’ is the great fantasy event of this summer along with Netflix’s ‘Sandman’ and the next Amazon series ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’. HBO’s great intellectual property, based on the work of George RR Martin, expands with a prequel that explores the reign of the House of Targaryens, 300 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’. A period of special harshness and tyranny in Westeros, as well as burning due to the threat of dragons that are the house pet.

‘Misfits’

Among the multiple and esteemed series that are coming back this month (some even linked to superheroes), ‘Misfits’ is especially striking, a surprising version of superpowers combined with adolescence and British social drama. A group of young misfits performing community service suddenly acquire different powers after a thunderstorm, and they start to use them in different ways in their daily lives. The quality changed with the seasons, as did the leads, but it was a nice reveal before the superhero genre (even teen superheroes) was the order of the day.

HBO Max has stopped its own production in almost all of Europe. Less in Spain (and for good reasons)

‘Pinocchio’

Among the few films this month, the most recent version of ‘Pinocchio’ by Mateo Garrone, and with Roberto Benigni in the role of Gepetto, stands out clearly. It is a good time to delve into its tone between Italian neorealism and the dark fairy tale, especially with the stop-motion animation version of Guillermo Del Toro for Netflix on the horizon and the new live-action version that will be released by Disney +.
