Be like Taylor Swift. Develop friendships with people outside your ideological circle and keep them.
last week she wrote self-proclaimed Swiftie Dave Portnoy a thank you note for always having her on his back. And it was personally delivered by his brother to the head of Barstool Sports at his concert in Miami.
Nice gesture, right?
No. As with anything in the Swift universe, it has caused an earthquake: generating op-eds, social media reactions, and tons of coverage.
In all the articles in the note the support of the players for the presidential candidates is mentioned. He endorsed Trump; endorsed Harris, something worth noting because, in 2024, our brains are so broken that we cannot conceive of admiring or befriending someone who opposes politics.
But a tweet from New York magazine’s The Cut took the cake: asking “Which Trump supporter will he hug next?“
“In a truly baffling decision, Swift has decided to be friends with… Dave Portnoy,” author Olivia Craighead. wrote in history that went with the tweet, adding that Swift thanked the Barstool boss for his loyalty.
“As far as I can tell, it refers to the fact that Portnoy, a proud supporter of Donald Trump, did not immediately disown his favorite pop star when he announced he was voting for Kamala Harris,” Craighead wrote.. “How great of you.”
Yes, Portnoy wasn’t judging anyone based on their political affiliation, unlike the author of The Cut article. Actually, I think Swift was referring to Portnoy’s intense support for her that has gone on for years, through public fights with celebrities and music bosses.
But politics, especially presidential politics, has devoured all spheres of our society that were previously non-partisan: sports, pop culture, entertainment… lines must be drawn. The act of self-classification, of dismissing those with ideological differences, has become a public display of virtue.
However, that’s apparently not the case for Swift, who, of course, is not above a little trouble. Ask any of his exes.
She sticks by her Trump-supporting friends, like fellow WAG Brittany Mahomes, despite the anger of her fans.
If you remember, Mahomes murdered a group of children while wearing a MAGA hat. It’s a joke. He liked a Trump post: a cruel thought crime that comes to light when his index finger hits a heart.
But Swift’s fans demand purity from their hero.
When photos of Mahomes and Swift together at the US Open surfaced in September, X generated a wave of disgust. One wrote: “The fact that she made a big deal about being so anti-Trump in 2020 sparked a whole controversy. documentary that highlights his political stance and how he ‘wants to be on the right side of history’ and still.”
Oh.
However, electoral practices have become a litmus test. Too many Democrats believe the Harris supporter is virtuous and saving democracy; the Trump voter is evil, racist, and probably a Nazi and should therefore be surgically removed from all aspects of his life.
Since 2016, there have been countless articles about Trump’s mere political existence ruining marriages, friendships, and families.
In 2017, a Reuters Ipsos poll found that 13% of 6,426 participants had talked politics with a friend or family member. And to this day, we still have to endure the very weak and hackneyed genre of Christmas-themed media stories about dealing with your MAGA relatives on Thanksgiving.
I recently learned the phrase “MAGA orphan” (someone who claims to have “lost” their parents to Donald Trump) while reporting on the crazy frenzy of Progressives proclaim that Tim Walz can replace fathers. They have repudiated the policy.
Earlier this month, a creepy non-binary influencer Jeffrey Marsh told his followers that they should isolate family members who vote for Trump. Woke zombie Howard Stern recently declared that he “hates” all Trump voters.
That whole pathetic business of isolating people seems very typical of Trump’s first term.
In her defiant act of being friends with people who might disagree with her, Swift has stood up for sanity, proving that relationships transcend what happens in a small booth every four years in November.
Burying yourself in an ideological silo is not healthy, it is cowardly. It will only stunt your worldview. This applies to both right-handed and left-handed people.
Your politics can be red or blue, but your social circle should never deliberately stop being purple.
Otherwise, you’re giving a politician you hate a lot more control over your life, which feels like yours..
