Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has raised $200 million since emerged as the virtual Democratic presidential candidate last week, a staggering number in his race against Republican nominee former President Donald Trump.
The campaign, which announced its latest fundraising total on Sunday, said the bulk of donations (66%) came from first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle and were made after the President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race and endorsed Harris.
More than 170,000 volunteers have also signed up to help Harris’ campaign with phone calls, canvassing and other get-out-the-vote efforts. Election Day is 100 days away.
“Vice President Harris’ momentum and energy are real, and so are the fundamentals of this race: This election will be very close and will be decided by a small number of voters in just a few states,” Michael Tyler, the campaign’s communications director, wrote in a memo.
Harris campaigned Saturday in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where she drew hundreds of people to a fundraiser held when Biden was leading the Democratic ticket. The event was originally expected to raise $400,000 but ended up raising nearly $1.4 million, according to the campaign.
Harris quickly garnered Democratic support after Biden, whose candidacy collapsed following his disastrous performance in the June 27 debate against Trump, dropped out of the race.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former House Minority Leader Jim Clyburn, former President Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were quick to announce their support.
Prodigious Democratic fundraisers former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama announced their endorsements on Friday.
At her first fundraising event on Saturday, Harris said she remained the “underdog” in the race but that her campaign was gaining momentum.
Future Forward, a fundraising organization that supports the Democratic agenda, announced last week that it had raised $150 million in pledges in the first 24 hours after Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris.
