Many movies are made in Arizona, including some iconic westerns, but here we take a look at three films from other genres that put Arizona front and center.

In 2023, Harkins Theaters announced a new concept: Harkins BackLot, a movie studio-inspired entertainment venue with bowling lanes, an arcade and a sports bar with giant screens. The first BackLot, originally scheduled to open this year, will launch in Norterra stores in March 2025, CEO Mike Bowers said.
The second Harkins BackLot will be at Verrado Marketplace, according to a press conference held on November 20 to commemorate the innovative of the 500,000-square-foot shopping center in Buckeye.
Harkins BackLot, which will open in spring 2026, will combine a movie theater with at least 12 bowling lanes, video games, electronic darts and a “virtual reality experience,” Bowers said.
The location will also include a sports bar with three large screens serving elevated bar food such as pizza, burgers and flatbreads.
Harkins BackLot is the Scottsdale-based company’s first foray into more than just movies. The Buckeye location will feature a movie theater in the same building as the entertainment venue, unlike the Harkins BackLot in Happy Valley, which is separate from the movie theater.
“We think it’s just a great addition to the movie theater experience,” Bowers said.
