Hanoi turns to ecological and efficient agricultural production

Multiple areas of Hanoi, Vietnam have applied science and technology to agricultural production, shifting the sector towards organic to improve food security.

The COVID-19 pandemic and rising fuel prices have caused the costs of fertilizers, pesticides and crops to rise and profits to decline.

In response to these challenges, the city has developed ecological and environmentally friendly agricultural models, with the aim of increasing efficiency by saving materials and recycling agricultural waste at the household level.

The cooperative model is also becoming more popular.

According to Dong Thi Vinh, director of the Hong Ha Safe Vegetables cooperative, the company has taken steps to produce clean products and minimize the impact on the environment.

It has required its members not to use chemical pesticides and to apply technology in the production and processing of products.

On average, the cooperative harvests 500 kg of vegetables to deliver to supermarkets and convenience stores, which is equivalent to a profit of 4 million VND (171 USD).

Another organic farming cooperative called Nam Phuong Tien in Chuong My district has five hectares dedicated to organic farming, along with 1,500ha for the safe cultivation of Dien pomelo.

Vu Thi Huyen, director of the cooperative, said that in order to generate a source of clean products that meets the demands of the market, the company only uses ecological supplies in its production.

Safe products can have up to 20% more value compared to products following traditional methods, he added.

Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, head of Hanoi’s Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Department, said the capital currently has 5,044 ha for growing safe vegetables and more than 50 ha for organic farming, along with various models of agricultural production with advanced technology.

Ta Van Cuong, deputy director of the city’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said growing green, safe and environmentally friendly produce is a necessity in modern agriculture.

This will not only create favorable conditions for localities to form large-scale production zones and for quality control, but also bring high economic value to farmers.

Hanoi has transformed more than 40,000 ha of rice production into new agricultural models, of which 15,600 ha are dedicated to high-quality rice, 3,000 to safe vegetables and 7,400 to fruit trees.

Farmers can also produce their own compost by combining agricultural by-products and bio-products.

This helps reduce some of the costs, while maintaining clean production standards, increasing values ​​and securing income for local people.

Tuong also said that in order to change the habit of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the department has held many training sessions on the nutrition required at each growth stage for optimal plant health.

This will not only create favorable conditions for localities to form large-scale production zones and for quality control, but also bring high economic value to farmers.

Thanks to these measures, the amount of pesticides used by farmers in Hanoi is among the lowest levels, compared to other cities and provinces.

The city’s agricultural sector will continue to consult local authorities on preferential policies on credit, business location and trade promotion, while planning concentrated production areas and applying advanced technology.

In this way, safe and efficient large-scale production is promoted to meet the demand of the domestic market and for export.
