Half of housing projects in Nariño, at risk due to road closure

With more than a week of closure of the Pan-American highway that connects from the south of the country to the center, it is already beginning to show other side effects in addition to the challenges in fuel and food supply. According to Camacol, this situation presents critical effects for the development of building activity in the region.

According to the union, there are 85 active housing projects in Pasto, of which 42 are in the construction phase, to which projects under construction are added for 145 thousand square meters in non-residential destinations.

“These projects under construction represent 2,303 housing units and are equivalent to half a billion pesos of annual investment. Therefore, the current closure of the road imminently affects the supply of supplies and materials, since there are less than two weeks of supplies available in the works”affirms the executive president (e) of Camacol, Edwin Chiriví.

The construction occupies more than 9,000 people directly and close to 22,000 throughout the value chainr, annually adds value for more than $1.3 trillion to the regional productive apparatus and builds formal housing for more than 2,000 homes annually.

“Construction is articulated with 54% of the productive apparatus of the country, it demands inputs from more than 34 subsectors of the economy and is supplied by more than 300,000 micro-businesses in the national territory, and only in the city of Pasto it occupies 18% of the employment and represents 7% of the region’s economy; and in that sense it should be a prioritized sector in the logistic contingency plans against the closure of the Pan-American highway. We cannot put employment and housing in the city and the region at risk”, affirmed the Executive President (e) of Camacol.

“At the regional level, from Camacol Nariño we make a call to be able to seek prompt solutions and offer all the institutional support so that timely actions are defined to guarantee an effective supply of inputs and materials to the different distribution channels and in the construction projects of the region”, assured Alejandra Lozano, manager of Camacol Nariño.
