Aug. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that humanity is “one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation” and that we are in a moment of danger “not seen since the height of the Cold War”.

Within the framework of the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Secretary General of the United Nations has pointed out that there is a danger of forgetting “the lessons forged from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki disasters “.

“States are seeking false security by storing and spending hundreds of billions of dollars on weapons that have no place on our planet. Nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons are now in arsenals around the world,” he stressed in his speech. opening at the event.

Thus, Guterres has shown that the crises, from the Middle East to the Korean peninsula, through the invasion of Ukraine, are festering and there is a risk that “protection measures to prevent escalation” will be weakened.

“We need the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons more than ever. That is why this Review Conference is so important. It is an opportunity to work out the measures that will help avert certain disaster and put humanity on a new path towards a world free of nuclear weapons,” he stressed.

For this reason, he has asked the countries to launch an active discussion on the multilateral agreements and frameworks regarding disarmament and non-proliferation, including the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“We need a renewed commitment and genuine negotiations in good faith. And it requires that all parties constantly listen, commit and take into account the lessons of the past, but also the fragility of the future,” he concluded.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) entered into force in 1970 and has 191 member states, including the five nuclear-weapon states, making the NPT the most widely adhered to multilateral disarmament agreement.
